WHO do you want to BECOME in 2020?

Before you even start setting goals it’s a good idea to do some preparation by looking back over your last year as you’ll get vital insights to help you create really powerful goals for the next year.

Firstly, make a list of all the things you did last year that made you proud and happy. Look at all the different areas of your life and think about the little things that made someone smile as well as the big achievements.

Here are the four main reasons this is important:

  1. First, we don’t pay enough attention to the good stuff. In fact, our minds tend to look for danger and negative things first
  2. You’ll feel great about yourself when you realise just how much you have done to be proud and happy about. So, take time to make this a long list
  3. If you know the sort of things that made you proud and happy this year, you can make sure that you do more of them next year
  4. What we focus on consistently we tend to create more of in our lives, so this exercise will and the next one help you to start focussing more on getting more of those things you like

Secondly, make a list of everything that you’re grateful for in your life, now and over the last year. The big things, the little things, the activities, the people, and anything else.

Thirdly, take a look back over the year and think about the things that didn’t go as you wanted. Don’t dwell on them, just take the opportunity to take the learnings from them and move on.

  • What could you do differently next year?
  • Could changing the way you think about them or approach them produce a better result next time?

Fourthly, was there anything didn’t you enjoy during the last year?

  • How can you do less of it?
  • Can you avoid it altogether?
  • If you have to do it, how can you change the way you look at it to make it more enjoyable?

Fifthly, what did you learn during the last year?

  • What technical things have you learnt?
  • How have you developed as a person during the last year?
  • What is possible for you now as a result of that?

Here’s the big BONUS

When you reflect on all of that, WHO are you now compared with last year and, as you start to look forward, WHO do you want to BECOME in 2020?

I’ll leave you with this thought:

Every day next year, in fact every day from now, you can choose to be the best you that you can be.
